The Tool That Comes with EVERY John Deere Gator
Every John Deere Gator comes equipped with a range of tools designed to enhance your experience. But there's one tool, often overlooked, that plays a pivotal role in ensuring a smooth ride: the shock spanner.
Whether you're a new John Deere Gator owner or have been using these UTVs and ATVs for years, it's good to have a firm understanding of the function and importance this tool provides.

What is the Shock Spanner?
The shock spanner tool comes with every John Deere Gator purchase and is designed to adjust the shocks on your machine. Given that ride quality is paramount on machines such as the John Deere Gator, the shock spanner is an indispensable tool whether you're using your UTV for work or leisure.
All John Deere XUV models boast a Four-Independent Suspension System, from the 825M to the 835S and the 500 Series. This means each wheel has its own independent suspension arm, and consequently, its own shock. These shocks are adjustable, allowing you to tailor the ride quality based on your needs. That's where the shock spanner tool comes into play.
How to Use the Shock Spanner
Behind each wheel, on the shock, you'll find an adjustment ring. This ring has notches designed to fit the hooked end of the shock spanner, as shown below. Use the shock spanner to turn the adjustment piece and move the spring upwards, adding depth to the collar and increasing tension. Then, turn the spanner to the left reducing the tension and offering a softer ride by allowing the spring more give.
Important Tips for Adjusting Shocks
- Before making adjustments, ensure the machine is raised off the ground. Start with either the front or rear, but ensure both sides are elevated before making adjustments.
- The adjustments should be equal on both sides for a balanced ride.
- After adjusting, roll the machine forward and backward. This action allows the shocks to settle into their new positions.

Remember, while the shock spanner is a vital tool, it's just the starting point. Properly adjusting your shocks requires a bit of effort and understanding. But with the right approach, you can ensure a smooth, comfortable ride every time.
