7 Steps to Prepare Your John Deere Zero Turn Mower for the New Mowing Season

7 Steps to Prepare Your John Deere Zero Turn Mower for the New Mowing Season

At the start of each mowing season, it’s a good idea to give your machine a once-over to identify any possible areas that might need attention. This is to ensure it will still run efficiently after being tucked away all winter. To help with this, below we have identified the top 7 things to look for when doing your annual at-home inspection.

To learn exactly how to perform any of the tasks mentioned below, be sure to check out our YouTube channel where you’ll find in-depth content like John Deere installation videos, attachment tips and tricks, and more. The accompanying video to this article is linked below.

State of the Engine

The first, and perhaps, most important item on this list is a full-engine inspection. If needed upon inspection, a full-engine service will also be required, but don't worry. With the right parts and help from us, you can most likely do this at home.

On a well-maintained mower that's been stored properly, an engine service at the start of the season will typically only involve replacing the engine oil, air filters, and fuel filters to clear out any residue and ensure your mower runs at its best in the season ahead. You can find these here.

Transaxle Fluid Level

Often overlooked, the transaxle fluid level in your mower is a vital part of keeping your transmission system in good working condition. We all know how quickly expenses can start adding up due to a faulty transmission, so be sure not to forgo this step. Zero-turn mowers will typically feature two tanks or reservoirs on top that hold the fluid. You can check the level in both by using the sight gauges on the sides to see where the fluid is inside the tanks.

If more is needed, consult your operator manual to determine the type of oil required for your specific mower as it may vary from machine to machine. Regardless of type, you can find the right oil and the funnel required to fill the tanks at your local Western Equipment or by clicking here and select Western Equipment as your local dealer.

Tire Pressure

It’s good practice to check the tire pressure prior to driving your mower for the first time after it’s been sitting unused during the off-season. An adequate amount of air in your mower tires will help prevent a blowout, protect your tire rims, and ensure a level deck. You may also be able to pinpoint a possible hole in the tire or a faulty seal causing a leak that needs to be repaired.

You can find a tire pressure gauge here.

Deck Level

Leveling your mower deck will ensure a clean and even cut as you mow throughout the season ahead. You can do this using a deck-leveling gauge. Check out our video here on how exactly you can level your mower deck at home.

And as stated previously, tire pressure is helpful when attempting this task, so be sure to check that prior to leveling your deck.

Belt Condition

To ensure a smooth ride and a great cut, you’ll also need to inspect all belts on your mower. Check both your deck and transmission belts for things like cracks, rips, and overall wear and tear.

If needed, you can find the right replacement belts for your mower here.

Grease Application

Grease points on your machine can begin to dry out over time, particularly while sitting in storage over winter. You will need to apply grease to these points prior to taking it out to mow for the first time each season in order to keep the mower deck working as it should.

These points include, but are not limited to, your mower spindles and front forks. You can find a grease gun here.

Tracking Adjustment

When driving, your levers need to be in the right position in order for your mower engines to be working in unison. If they aren’t, steering will be more challenging, preventing you from achieving that perfect, straight cut on your grass.

As you can see, the levers are uneven in the picture below. If you find yours look similar, you can easily adjust their positioning with a few simple tweaks which will adjust the tracking as well.
